As liquid photoimageable solder mask technology matures, engineers are treating the PCB surface coating as more than a cosmetic choice. Color and finish now affect inspection efficiency, durability and process compatibility, though manufacturers caution that no single option suits every design.
Solder mask color is often selected for appearance, but its practical effect on production is substantial. The coating, a polymer-and-solvent ink applied by screen printing, spraying or curtain coating, forms a precise protective film that provides insulation and corrosion resistance. The chosen color can alter contrast during manual and automated inspection, making some defects easier to detect than others.
| Color | Visual characteristics | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|
| Green | High contrast, moderate light reflection | General standard, suitable for manual inspection |
| White | Attractive appearance, strong contrast with black legend | High-cleanliness environments; trace inspection is more difficult |
| Black | Low contrast, prone to shadowing | Generally not recommended; risks heat absorption and legend discoloration |
| Red | Good contrast, visually distinctive | Projects requiring good visibility |
| Blue | High contrast for labels | Boards with dense labeling |
Yellow solder mask, while visually distinctive, is usually not a first choice. Its contrast with legend and circuit traces is comparatively poor, making production management more difficult.
Beyond color, the surface treatment of the solder mask determines the final texture of the product and the ease of inspection.
Matte and glossy processes do not differ significantly in cost or manufacturing flow. Selection should therefore prioritize the product’s operating environment and inspection requirements.
LPISM is a strong alternative to conventional coatings, but it is not universal. During design, confirm whether the board involves special plating processes. If such plating is required, the suitability of LPISM may be limited, and technical confirmation with the manufacturer is advised before production to ensure final product reliability.
